Academy FAQ

Academy FAQ

Q: Should my child try out for the Lakers or join the Lakers Academy?

A: If you and your child are sure he or she is ready for the commitment of travel soccer, including 3 hours of practice per week including both soccer and fitness training, as well as 1 or more competitive games per week, then the Lakers travel soccer program is probably the correct choice.  If your child simply wants to learn advanced skills at a higher level from a professional coach, the Lakers academy is probably the correct choice.

Q: What ages and grades are generally in the two Lakers programs?

A: For the 2010-2011 season, most kids at the U8 level of travel soccer will be born after August 2002, and before August 2003, however, some kids may be younger if they have participated in other academies or travel soccer preparation programs.  The target for the Academy will be children born between August 2003 and August 2004.  The leagues in which the Lakers play are age-based and do not take into account grade in school.

Q: If my child joins the Lakers Academy and decides in the middle of the year that he or she wants to play actual games, are there any opportunities to do so?

A: If there are mid-year openings at the U8 levels of the Lakers teams, Academy players and their parents will be notified of the openings and be allowed to try out, as these open tryouts are open to the public.  In addition, if there is enough interest from families in forming a competitive team for the Spring season, this will be possible if supported by the Lakers Board and the Lakers official trainers, Future Pros.

Q: Should my child play house league in addition to Lakers Academy?

A: The Lakers academy is meant for children who have a passion for soccer, and are interested in playing more than the Glen Ellyn house league provides.  Playing in both the Glen Ellyn house league in addition to training with the Lakers Academy is encouraged if your child wishes to do so.

Q: Are there any other programs for kids who are exploring soccer for the first time?

A: For kids who are brand new to soccer, we recommend Mini Pros Soccer for 4-5 year olds, or Future Pros Skills Training, which are both available in the Glen Ellyn Park District Brochure
